Douglas Matus lives and works in Austin and Marfa, TX. He holds a BA in English and Classical Civilizations from the University of Texas at Austin, and an MFA in Creative Writing from CalArts in Los Angeles, CA. He discovered his passion for teaching right out of college and secured his first position at the age of 23. Alongside the founders of the Khabele School, Douglas worked to develop the educational practices that have now benefited hundreds of students for more than 20 years. After several years of teaching, he left to pursue a graduate degree and new career as a dedicated writer. While living in Marfa, TX, his passion for education reignited. Douglas returned to Austin and his old school, which had thrived and evolved into a new entity called  Headwaters School. He currently teaches in the International Baccalaureate program at the high school campus in downtown Austin, TX.
